I traveled to the Kula Lodge on the island of Maui in Hawaii in search of beautiful garden scenes. The lodge and restaurant has a gorgeous view of Maui toward the west Maui mountains and the gardens are filled with flowers, succulents and so much more. Vines of pink flowers and white hibiscus caught my eye and would become the background of the oil painting. I chose Luau fern for the dress design a rare, endemic species that is native to Hawaii.
I found the colorful pastel hues of the delicate blooms stood out against the perfect blue sky. I envisioned a local girl sitting among the plants happy and content as that is how I felt gazing on all the natural beauty. To me, this painting of flowers and wahine encapsulates the history of the woman in nature image in expressionism.
